Aubrey Bruneau 's 1950's Chris Craft 18.5 ft Utility runabout kit boat. Powered by a 1948 Mercury flathead V8, using Navarro speed equipment.
Late this spring, I decided I better do an exterior refinishing. hope to have the boat ready to use in a few weeks.
After the sanding was completed, the pattern for the orange was masked and painted... re-coating 4 times over 3 days.
Then, a pattern for the cream pinstriping was designed and laid out. First coat of cream paint went on this evening.
Now, with the cream pin stripes done, I need to let the paint cure for a while. In the meantime, I am contemplating adding a bit of a darker stain to the mahogany around the outer portion of the deck ?
Well, I did the dark mahogany stain, with a lighter stain on the sides. Sure looks different now !
Here we are after seven(7) coats of varnish on the top deck !... ooh man, did this old dry mahogany soak it up ! Note above, how light the centre portions between the stripes was before the varnish was applied. Didn't expect it to go this dark... I was planning on more contrast... but, oh well... looks OK.
The sides were done in my own custom stain mixture... which ended up providing a very authentic natural mahogany look. Only two coats of varnish so far. Will be completing this part of the job over the next few days.
Here's just after applying the first of two more coats of varnish on the sides of the hull. The bright orange on the bottom is definitely unique !
Here it is, basicially re-assembled. I must apologize for the junk in the background !.... Needless to say, the next plan is to re-do the interior in cream white with "burnt orange" flooring. For now, this is it though. I hope to do the upholstery and engine this coming winter.
